Dig Where You Stand

NOTES ON THE POTTERY

This is a small but interestingly diverse assemblage of ceramics, ranging from crude (and presumably low-cost) transfer-printed "Willow Pattern" through higher-quality wares to hand-painted (and presumably higher-cost) examples. There are two fragments that show "dedritic" Mocha ware type decoration.

My gut feeling is that a lot of this collection dates to the period before the hgouse was built, when the area was still open fields. This is perhaps supported by the fragment of pot lid bearing an image of the Great Exhibition (1851).
