A WANDER AROUND THE CITY OF CAVES

Although Nottingham has lost much of the heritage of its recent past (and much is still threatened), enough remains to make it a fascinating and rewarding place to explore if one keeps one's eyes peeled. The following photographs are just a few appetisers. The city lies above over 450 caves chiselled into the soft sandstone that forms its foundations. They are thankfully being surveyed and recorded, and one can catch glimpses of the occasional cave entrance that survives, often almost hidden behind modern buildings. They will gradually disappear as development continues.
