Historical Archaeology in Canada

I spent the summer of 2010 in British Columbia, Canada, researching and writing my MA dissertation. However I grabbed some opportunities to glimpse some of that country's historical and industrial archaeology. At the moment all I've had time to do is upload some mostly uncaptioned albums of photographs (see below). But eventually I'll extract highlights from these, caption them and also write up my observations. I'll also write a little about what was originally going to be the subject of my research, the streetcar suburbs of Vancouver.

The Midland Mine, Alberta

Scant but preserved remains of a coal mine to the west of Drumheller, not far from the Tyrrell Dinosaur Museum. ALBUM

Midway Museum, British Columbia

Housed in what was once Midway's railway station building, this museum has a collection of agricultural and other machinery as well as examples of material culture from this small railway town. ALBUM

Fort Steele

A quick look around a fascinating preserved settlement in the south east of British Columbia. ALBUM

The Atlas Mine, Alberta

Not far from Drumheller, the Atlas Mine has preserved the only surviving example in Canada of a wooden coal tipple. ALBUM

A diversion into Washington State

(Coming soon) I drove through Washington State, just south of the 49th parallel, to visit the "ghost" town of Molson.
